Alexis Gideon

Members: Alexis Gideon

(b. 1980 New York City, NY.  Lives and works in the United States.)

Alexis Gideon graduated from LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts (Manhattan) in 1999.  He graduated from Wesleyan University with a degree in musical composition and performance under the mentorship of music legend Anthony Braxton in 2003.

Gideon's main body of work is his Video Musics series.  The three Video Musics installments explore traditional folklore through modern multimedia techniques, rich musical compositions and an epic ballad story structure.  All dialogue and narration are expressed through lyrics and music that are performed live by Gideon alongside the projected video.  The musical score is composed by the artist himself and serves as the backbone of the work.

The New Museum of Contemporary Art (Manhattan) paired Gideon with renowned South African artist William Kentridge for a joint exhibition in January 2013.   Gideon performed Video Musics III: Floating Oceans to a sold-out audience.   New York Magazine called the work “brilliant.”  Click here to read New Museum interview.

The Video Musics series has been performed over 350 times in ten countries, including at:
          Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago
          Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland
          Museum of Contemporary Art, Tucson
Carnegie Museum of Art’s 2013 International Apartment Space

          Suedpol (Luzerne, Switzerland)
          Centre d'Art Bastille (Grenoble, France)

Gideon has received two project grants from the Regional Arts and Culture Council of Oregon.  His work has been translated into French, Spanish, German, Italian and Chinese and has been included in the Chinese culture curriculum at Oregon State University.  In 2012, the French experimental art and technology association Ouedis invited him to the South of France for three months to create an interactive new media project based on his work.  Gideon has lectured at SUNY (Stoneybrook), Kawenga Digital Arts and Culture Center (Montpellier, France), Washington State University, University of New Mexico (Albuquerque), University of Oklahoma (Tulsa), and the Portland Art Museum, among others.
